Use case
Building communications into our own app
Add messaging, calls or video to your product through APIs.
If you run your own app or platform, you can add messaging, voice or video through programmable building blocks: APIs, and SDKs, which are ready-made code libraries. This is what CPaaS, communications platform as a service, originally means. You keep control of the experience while the provider runs the networks and carrier connections.
What matters when choosing
- Clear documentation, SDKs for your languages and platforms, and a test environment.
- Reliability commitments, a public status page and support that reaches engineers.
- Coverage of the channels and countries your product needs.
- Signed webhooks for delivery, replies and call events, so you can trust what arrives.
- Pricing that stays predictable as your usage grows.
Questions to ask providers
- What uptime do you commit to in the contract, and what happens if you miss it?
- How hard would it be to switch providers, and can we use more than one?
- What limits apply to sending rates and simultaneous calls, and how are they raised?
Common mistakes
- Building directly on one provider's quirks with no layer in between, which makes a later switch costly.
- Underestimating compliance work, such as sender registration and consent, which APIs do not do for you.
- Building infrastructure yourself that a provider would run better and more cheaply.
Typical channels: SMS WhatsApp Voice Video Email Push notifications In-app chat RCS
