A one-time code proves that a person holds the phone or email address they claim. It sounds simple, but the code must arrive within seconds in any country, and the service must resist fraudsters who trigger codes to numbers they profit from. Choosing well is about reliability, fallback and fraud protection more than the price of a single message.

What matters when choosing

  • Delivery speed and success measured per country, not one global average.
  • Automatic fallback to another channel, such as WhatsApp, a voice call or email, when SMS fails.
  • Protection against artificially inflated traffic, where fraudsters request codes to premium numbers they earn from.
  • A verification service that creates and checks the codes for you, so your team does not have to build it.

  • Trusting the 'delivered' status alone: a code that arrives too late is still a failed login.
  • Ignoring sender registration rules, so codes are filtered in countries that require registered sender names or templates.
  • Leaving sign-up forms open to bots that can request codes in bulk.
