Use case
Transactional notifications and alerts
The messages customers are waiting for: confirmations, updates and warnings.
Order confirmations, delivery updates, receipts, password changes and outage alerts are messages a customer expects. Your systems trigger them, not a campaign, and many countries and channels treat them as a separate category from marketing, with lighter consent rules but stricter limits on content. Reliability and the right channel for each message matter most.
What matters when choosing
- An API or ready-made connectors that let your systems send a message the moment something happens.
- Support for pre-approved message templates on channels that require them, such as WhatsApp.
- Delivery receipts and status updates sent back to your systems, so you know when a message failed.
- Fallback between channels, for example from a chat app to SMS or email.
- Separate handling of transactional and marketing traffic, so promotions cannot slow or block alerts.
Questions to ask providers
- How do you keep transactional and marketing traffic apart in sender names, queues and reputation?
- What happens to a message that fails, and how quickly do we find out?
- How do you handle template approval and changes on the channels that require them?
Common mistakes
- Slipping promotions into transactional messages, which can break channel rules and consent laws.
- Sending everything by SMS when a channel the customer already uses would be richer or cheaper, or the reverse.
- Not keeping message status, so support cannot tell a customer whether an alert was sent.
