The basics

What is CPaaS, in plain words?

Communications Platform as a Service: the services that let a business's software send and receive messages and calls, so customers hear from it on the channel they actually use. You have used it today without noticing.

Read: what CPaaS actually is
  • The code you type to log inSent by text or WhatsApp the moment you ask for it, and gone a few minutes later.
  • The reminder before your appointmentWith a reply button to confirm or move it, so fewer people miss the slot.
  • The chat with your bank or airlineEvery question in one thread, whether you wrote on WhatsApp, Instagram or the website.

How it works

How a business message travels

Six steps between something happening in your business and a person seeing it — and the status coming back to you.

Read: the five layers of a stack
  1. 01Something happens in your business

A customer books, pays, asks a question or asks for a code. Your website, app or business system decides a message should go out.

  2. 02Your system asks the provider

Your system sends the message, the recipient and the channel to the provider's API, or a no-code tool does it for you. The provider checks your account, consent rules and templates.

  3. 03The provider picks the route

The provider chooses how to deliver it: which channel, which sender, and which connection to the mobile network or messaging platform, with a fallback if the first choice fails.

  4. 04The network or platform carries it

A mobile operator, a chat platform, an email service or the phone platforms' notification services carry the message, under their own rules for senders and content.

  5. 05It reaches the person

The message appears on the person's phone, computer or in your app. They may read it, tap a button or reply, and a reply travels back the same way.

  6. 06Status comes back to you

The provider reports what happened, such as delivered, failed or read where the channel allows, so your system can update the record, try another channel or alert your team.

  1. 01Fewer missed appointmentsTimely reminders that let people confirm, cancel or reschedule with one reply free up slots for someone else instead of leaving them empty.
  2. 02Faster and safer loginsOne-time codes that arrive quickly, with a fallback when one channel fails, let real customers in and keep fraudsters out without a password reset queue.
  3. 03Answers where customers already areCustomers can ask in the app they already use, whether a chat app, your site or a phone call, rather than hunting for a form or waiting on hold.
  4. 04One view of every conversationWhen every channel lands in one shared inbox linked to the customer record, nobody has to repeat themselves and nothing falls between two phones.
  5. 05Timely alerts customers act onOrder, delivery, payment and security updates sent the moment something changes reduce "where is my order?" calls and help people act before a problem grows.
  6. 06Campaigns people opt intoMessages sent with recorded consent, to the right audience and with an easy way out, are more welcome, break fewer rules and protect the sender's reputation.
  7. 07Lower cost to serveSimple requests handled by self-service and bots, and conversations that replace calls, let the same team serve more customers without lowering quality, as long as people can always reach a person.
  8. 08Calls and video inside your own productConsultations, support calls and chat can happen inside your app or website, under your brand, with the record kept where your business needs it.
  9. 09Each customer's preferred channel, worldwideThe most used apps differ from one country to the next; one platform that reaches each person on the channel they actually read lets you serve every market without a separate project for each.
  10. 10More sales from conversationsQuick replies to enquiries, product suggestions and payment links inside the chat shorten the path from a question to a purchase.

Myths and facts

Six things buyers often get wrong

Each one corrected in a sentence or two, with where to read more.

Start learning
  • Myth The cheapest price per message makes the cheapest provider

    Fact

What you pay depends on segments, failed attempts, fraud, platform fees, numbers, support and minimum commitments. A low unit price on a route that does not deliver can cost more than a higher one that does. →

  • Myth Delivered means read

    Fact

Delivered only means the network or device accepted the message, and on some channels even that is reported loosely. Whether people read it and acted on it has to be measured separately. →

  • Myth One provider covers every country equally well

    Fact

Every provider is stronger in some countries and channels than others, and local registration rules differ widely. Ask for evidence in your own markets, not a global coverage map. →

  • Myth All channels are interchangeable; just pick the cheapest

    Fact

Channels differ in who may start a conversation, what may be said, what it costs and what a failure looks like. The right choice depends on the message, the country and the person. →

  • Myth A bot that keeps people away from agents is a successful bot

    Fact

Keeping conversations away from people is not the same as solving problems. Measure whether customers got what they needed, and make reaching a person easy. →

  • Myth Unofficial tools for chat apps are just a cheaper way to do the same thing

    Fact

Tools that automate personal accounts or bypass a platform's official API can stop working or get numbers banned without warning, and the business carries that risk. →

Independence

Nobody can buy their way onto your shortlist

No vendor can pay to be listed, scored or ranked. Products that share an owner with cpaas.co are listed on the same terms and say so wherever they appear.

  • No partners. No partnership, reseller or referral relationship with any listed vendor; shared ownership is disclosed on the listing.
  • No affiliate links. Links to vendors are plain links; nobody is paid when you click or buy.
  • No paid placement. Listing, scoring and ranking cannot be bought. Nothing is featured or pinned.
  • Relationship-blind ranking. The engine reads only your brief and each listing's facts, and an automated test fails if any relationship field moves a result.
