WeChat

Official accounts, mini programs and customer service inside the super-app many people in China use every day.

WeChat combines messaging, payments, official accounts and mini programs in one app. Businesses that serve people in China, or Chinese-speaking travellers and communities abroad, use official accounts to publish updates, answer questions and send service messages, and mini programs to sell and book. It runs on its own rules for account verification, content and messaging windows, so local expertise matters.

What matters when choosing

  • Experience setting up and verifying official accounts for businesses like yours, including from outside China.
  • Customer service messaging that respects the platform's 48-hour reply window.
  • Integration with mini programs, payments and your customer records.
  • Clear advice on content rules and where data is hosted.

Questions to ask providers

  1. Which type of official account do we need, and how long does verification take?
  2. How do WeChat conversations reach our team and our other systems outside China?
  3. What data stays in China, and what leaves it?

Common mistakes

  • Copying a strategy from other chat apps without checking WeChat's own messaging rules.
  • Underestimating account verification and content review before launch.

What it is good at

  • Reaching people for whom WeChat is the main app.
  • Combining content, service, payments and mini programs.
  • Followers who chose to follow your account.

What to watch for

  • Verification and content rules of its own.
  • Few broadcasts: four mass messages a month on a service account, one a day on a subscription account, and replies only within 48 hours.
  • Data hosting and cross-border questions.

How it is priced

There is no charge per message; the platform limits how often you may send instead. The published fees are for verification: RMB 300 a year for an Official Account held by a mainland Chinese entity (the annual review costs the same), and US$99 per application for an overseas entity, not refunded whatever the outcome. The rest is the provider's or developer's work, and mini programs and payments carry their own costs.
