In-app chat

Chat between your customers, your team and each other, inside your own product.

In-app chat adds messaging to your own mobile or web app through an SDK and an API: support chat, buyer and seller messages in a marketplace, a driver and a passenger, a tutor and a student, or a community. Businesses choose it to keep conversations, data and the experience inside their own product rather than sending people to another app. People experience it as part of your product, with your design and your rules.

What matters when choosing

  • SDKs for the platforms you build on, with offline support and message sync across devices.
  • Moderation tools: reporting, blocking and filtering of harmful content.
  • Push notifications for new messages when the app is closed.
  • Control over where message data is stored and how long it is kept.
  • Webhooks so your systems and bots can react to messages.

Questions to ask providers

  1. How is usage counted, by monthly active users, concurrent connections or messages?
  2. Can we export all messages and users if we change provider?
  3. Which moderation and safety tools are included, and which cost extra?

Common mistakes

  • Building chat from scratch and then discovering how much sync, notifications and moderation involve.
  • Opening user-to-user chat without moderation, reporting or blocking.

What it is good at

  • Keeping conversations and data inside your product.
  • Your design, your rules, no outside app required.
  • Conversations between your users, not only with your team.

What to watch for

  • Only reaches people who open your app.
  • Moderation and safety become your responsibility.
  • Costs that grow with active users.

How it is priced

Usually priced per monthly active user or by concurrent connections, in tiers, with moderation, translation or long message history sometimes charged as add-ons.
