Messenger
Conversations that start from your Facebook Page, ads and website.
Messenger lets people message a business's Facebook Page, and lets the business reply through a shared inbox, a bot or its own systems. Businesses use it for pre-sales questions, support and conversations started from ads. When someone writes, the business can reply freely for 24 hours. After that, a person (not a bot) may still reply for up to seven days under the human agent tag; other follow-ups need a utility template or a marketing message the person agreed to receive.

What matters when choosing
- Messenger in the same inbox as your other channels, with one history per customer.
- Tools that respect the messaging window and the rules for messages sent after it.
- Handover between bot and person that the customer can see and understand.
- Links from ads and posts that open a conversation with useful context attached.
Questions to ask providers
- How do you stop agents or bots from sending messages the platform does not allow outside the window?
- Do Messenger and Instagram conversations with the same person appear together?
- Which permissions do you need on our Page, and how do we remove them if we leave?
Common mistakes
- Building follow-ups on the old message tags: since 27 April 2026 the event, account and post-purchase update tags return an error. Only the human agent tag remains, for replies by a person within seven days; other follow-ups need utility templates or the Marketing Messages API, which requires the person's opt-in and which Meta says it intends to charge for (a free trial for now).
- Leaving Page messages unanswered while the team works only in email and phone queues.
What it is good at
- Questions that start from ads, posts and your Page.
- Rich replies with buttons and quick replies.
- Conversations where the customer writes first.
What to watch for
- Strict limits on messaging after the standard window.
- Usage that varies a great deal by country and age group.
- Changes to platform rules that need prompt updates.
How it is priced
Meta publishes no per-message rate card for Messenger, and replies inside the 24-hour window carry no per-message fee. Cost comes from ads that start conversations (click-to-Messenger ads and sponsored messages), from the provider's inbox or bot subscription, priced per seat or per contact, and from Meta's paid features: Meta says it intends to charge for marketing messages, now in a free trial, and plans subscriptions and token pricing for its own AI agent.
