APIs, SDKs and webhooks that behave predictably at scale.

If you are building messaging, voice or video into software, you will judge a provider by its APIs and how it behaves under load. Good documentation and SDKs save weeks, but the long-term costs come from reliability, rate limits, compliance work and how hard it would be to switch. Plan for more than one provider from the start.

What matters when choosing

  • A clear API reference, SDKs in your languages and a free sandbox for testing.
  • Signed webhooks, safe retries without duplicates and consistent error codes.
  • Published rate limits, a status page and an incident history.
  • Help with compliance tasks such as sender registration and template approval.
  • Usage and cost data available through the API, so you can monitor spend.

Questions to ask providers

  1. What uptime and latency do you commit to, and how are service credits calculated?
  2. How do you handle retries and duplicate events in webhooks?
  3. Which parts of sender registration, such as US 10DLC or India's DLT, do you handle, and which are left to us?

Common mistakes

  • Coupling your code tightly to one provider's data model.
  • Treating a 'delivered' receipt as proof the user received and acted on the message.
  • Leaving compliance until launch, when registrations can take longer than the build.
